Cleaning Crayon from Walls

Summary: It's nearly impossible to raise even one child without finding crayon marks on the wall. Crayon marks may be impossible to remove with regular cleaning fluids, but a little bit of innovation can turn items around your house into crayon-removal miracles. Baby wipes, lubricating oil, and the old standby, ammonia, can all help to remove crayon marks from walls.

Here are quite a few tips for removing crayon from your walls. Your course of action will depend on the surface of your wall; however, I am sure you will find some information here that will make that crayon mark a thing of the past.

Spray the mark with multipurpose lubricating oil (don't let it drip on the floor). You can put this on a rag and wipe the area instead of spraying the wall if you like. Then you can use a paper towel or clean white cloth to gently wipe the mark.

If the crayon mark is stubborn, sprinkle a little baking soda on a damp sponge and gently rub in a circular motion. If lubricant residue remains, dampen a sponge with a solution of one or two drops of mild dishwashing liquid to one cup of water. Squeeze out the sponge and gently rub the mark in a circular motion. Rinse the sponge and lightly moisten it with water to wipe the area once more; then dry with a clean cloth.

Other things that you can use to remove crayon from walls are

  • Baby Wipes. Simply rub the area with a baby wipe (no matter what the name brand) and you will be surprised at how quickly the crayon comes off the wall or wallpaper.
  • Goop Hand Cleaner. The oil base of this hand cleaner (available in most auto supply stores) simply dissolves the crayon. Apply to the affected area and wipe the marks away.
  • Ammonia. Just soak a cloth with ammonia and work over the crayon marks. Rinse and dry.

You can get crayon off of marlite, paneling, or some tougher types of walls using a bit of toothpaste. Don't use the gel type, which is known to stain. Use regular paste and a soft cloth to clean up the crayon marks.
