Hide Nicks and Scratches in Porcelain

One of the beauties of porcelain is its smoothness. Nicks and scratches can easily make the porcelain lose its appeal. Fortunately, it is possible to hide those annoying nicks and scratches. If you want to conceal these ugly blemishes, you can use specially formulated porcelain paint to paint over them. First, make sure to scrub the damaged area thoroughly with a surface cleaner (like Formula 409®) to remove all traces of soap and grease. If you are cleaning the whole porcelain item, just be sure to do an extra careful job on the damaged area. After you have thoroughly cleaned the porcelain, wipe the scratch or nick (and the surrounding area) with nail polish remover. Leave the area to dry before applying the paint.

Always repair large chips and cracks in a porcelain fixture with a colored epoxy resin designed for the job. Do your best to find the right color. When you can find it in the right shade, this does two things. First, it patches the surface and second, it colors the area to match the object. Three ingredients should come with your epoxy: resin, hardener, and color.

Once you have cleaned the area, applied the nail polish remover, and obtained the right shade epoxy resin, make sure to scrub the area around the blemish with fine-grain sandpaper to remove all rust and soap deposits. After you have done this, apply nail polish remover to a clean cloth and wipe the area thoroughly. Next, mix the resin and hardener and add the color until it matches the object. This is usually provided with the epoxy, but if it is not, you should be able to obtain it at the same store where you bought the epoxy. When everything is well blended, use a craft knife to fill the crack with the epoxy compound. Finish off the job by pouring rubbing alcohol on your finger and, using a very light touch, smoothing the surface, taking care not to smear it.
