Dealing with Cigarette Smoke

Summary: Smokers, those who live with smokers, and friends of smokers can all have problems dealing with smoke smells. Refusing to allow smoking in your home and using these other tips can help to eliminate smoke smells. Certain kinds of air purifiers, potpourri, or air fresheners can all help to disguise or remove smoke smells.

Cigarette smoke can be difficult to deal with, especially if you are allergic to cigarette smoke or if you do not approve of smoking in your house. If such is the case, one clear sign to your guests that you do not approve is to not provide ashtrays for them. If your guests want to smoke, politely explain your problem. Do not be afraid to ban smoking in your home or office. Most people will understand that you do not approve.

Getting rid of the smell of smoke can be difficult if you smoke or live with a smoker. There are a few things you can try to minimize the affect of the smell. They follow below.

It will be easier to eliminate the odor for temporary tobacco smells than if you are or live with a smoker, but it can still be difficult. Here are a few tips.

  • Burn scented candles or incense. They will clear and perfume the air.
  • Put solid room deodorizers near air vents or windows.
  • When your guests have gone, open all the doors and windows and make sure you empty all ashtrays.

When there is smoke in the car, you can try these tips.

  • Empty the ashtrays after each use, then put a layer of baking soda in them to smother new butts and ashes.
  • Special car air ionizers exist and can be purchased at most places that sell car accessories. They plug into the cigarette lighter slot.
  • Make the ashtrays unusable; fill them with candy and loose change for the parking meter. This will encourage you and others not to smoke in the car.
  • Smoke is a stubborn smell to remove, but these few tips should help reduce the effects of the odor.

Lee,
The second tip works for cleaning or what I call washing the air of almost all smells. Washing or cleaning surfaces takes the smells away from the surface but it lingers in the air (whatever the smell may be, but doing the process in the second tip washes the air. It also helps remove microscopic dust from the air as it removes the stale air. Patti

Those are some great ideas Patti. Do you know if the second one will work for general air freshening as well?

I have two tips, both do work very well. If you have a smoker in the family try using the opague covered ashtrays for sale at most tobacco stores. Fill them about half full with baking soda and it stops the smell even when the smoker forgets to empty the ash tray.

To clean the air at my house, I use the lightest weight linen or muslin squares soaked in scented cleaner. I attach them to the blades of my ceiling fan, on the slowest speed and let them spin until dry. If necessary I will repeat the the steps until my air is fresh again. Patti

Hi, I can't seem to find a way to remove smoke and nictotine odors out of a plastic water pitcher. I have tried bleach and dishsoap and put in dishwasher and even sprayed with a pet urine smell remover and nothing is working. This is a Nikken water pitcher and quite expensive to replace. Can you help me with anything further I can try? I am going to try the baking soda next.
