Carpets have the tendency to wear down over time. After just a couple of years of use, it is not uncommon to have a trampled down area where people walk, and yet have that contrast significantly with the nice corner areas where people rarely go. If you want to give your carpet a quick lift, try this neat little trick. You do not need an expensive carpet shampoo to make your carpet look great. All you need is five minutes and a half cup of ammonia with two cups of water.
Start off by mixing the half cup of ammonia with the two cups of water in a mixing bowl. Before you begin applying it all over the carpet, test the solution on a hidden area of your carpet to make sure it does not cause any damage. Then, use a sponge mop to lightly apply the mixture on your carpet. You could also apply the ammonia solution with a spray bottle and gently rub it in with an old rag. You won't need to use much. Using too much may also bother your guests, since ammonia smells much like urine. Make sure that the mixture will be dry before you have any company over. To help the ammonia solution dry more quickly, try leaving your windows and blinds open so that the sun and a gentle breeze can work together to dry the carpet and eliminate the fumes.
While this mixture will help to freshen your carpet, it may also leave behind an interesting odor. Try using some of our tips on having fresh scents in your home, such as spraying your light bulbs with perfume to give a room a welcoming scent every time you turn on the light.
Important: Never use ammonia on wool carpet, and avoid using it if you have dogs or cats. The pets think the smell is urine and will mess on it to mark their territory.
