Make Your Own Window-Washing Liquid

Summary: You can make your own window washing liquid with ammonia and water. An even better alternative to Windex® is to mix ammonia, alcohol, dishwashing liquid, and water, a mixture that will not freeze. Make sure to label your homemade cleaning fluid bottles.

If you have ever thought that your glass cleaner is a lot like water, then you are right. Most glass cleaners are about 95 percent water, with the rest being ammonia, with perhaps a couple more additives to add color or scent. So if you no longer want to purchase your Windex® at the store but would prefer to make your own, you can. Just follow the steps listed below.

All you need to do to make your own window washing liquid is mix two tablespoons of sudsy ammonia with one quart of water. You can make more if you keep the ratio the same. It is easiest if you mix the two ingredients in a spray bottle, and then you will save on dishes. Be sure to label your spray bottle. Labeling bottles is a requirement at a place of employment so people do not accidentally use something for the wrong purpose. Doing the same thing at home is a good idea for the same reason. If you want to get really creative, you can design and print labels from your computer, and then you can try to convince your friends to try and buy some of your homemade window cleaner.

If you want to improve a little bit on your window cleaner design, consider making a window cleaner that will not freeze. All you need to do is mix together a half cup of sudsy ammonia, two cups of rubbing alcohol, one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid, and one gallon of water. This combination could make your glass cleaner better than the store bought alternative.

When you go to the store to try to find sudsy ammonia, keep in mind that sudsy ammonia is basically any ammonia that has soap added, so check the bottle in your local store to see if soap or another form of detergent is in the ingredients list.
