Removing Residue from Adhesive Tape

Summary: It's so frustrating when you remove adhesive tape and it leaves gunk behind, and sometimes that gunk seems impossible to remove. Here are some ways that you can remove that gunk from your surfaces.

I hate it when I buy something from the store or remove tape from something, and I'm left with a sticky, gunky residue. This can happen with adhesive tape, with price tags, and just about anything else with adhesive on it. Sometimes I try just rubbing the adhesive residue off with my fingers, and usually the result is just that I have sticky, gunk-covered fingers. So, if you're perplexed about how to effectively remove that nasty adhesive gunk from your possessions, here are a couple of proven ways to get rid of that junk forever!

The best way to remove residue from adhesive tape is to simply go out and buy some adhesive remover. There is quite a selection out there from which to choose, ranging from Goo-Gone to Sticky Remover. This is the easiest method in my opinion and one well worth the investment. You can find adhesive remover specific products in any home improvement aisle of any general goods store.

Another tip to keep in mind as you go about removing that adhesive residue is to take a sharp edge and use it to scrape the residue off the surface. This can usually be pretty effective, but you do need to be careful because you don't want to damage the surface in the process. It's best if you can use a scraping device in tandem with a specific residue remover. The combined power of the remover and the scraper can usually yield success.

Another trick you can use is to soak the surface in water to loose the sticker from the surface. This needs to be done before you remove the adhesive, however; otherwise, you'll just have a wet surface. This technique can usually work pretty well, and really all you need is patience. For hard to remove stickers this can be a great way to lessen the residue left, but you also might need to still do some work to completely remove the residue.

Removing residue isn't impossible, it just takes some work and patience. Tackle it head on and you'll be left with a residue free surface!

I have discovered that using something as simple as vegetable oil helps to easily remove adhesives. The oil prevents adhesion and the material usually rolls into a ball and is easily discarded.
