Cleaning Stainless Steel Kitchen Sinks

Summary: Stainless steel sinks need a little love and attention to look clean and shiny. Of the six cleaning methods given here, you're sure to find one or two that will work for you. Some involve household ingredients, while others are purchased products.

Stainless steel is an important material in today's kitchens. It's sanitary, durable, and user-friendly. Another great quality of stainless steel is its modern, clean look. When shined, it can become quite beautiful. What's that you say? Your stainless steel sink isn't very beautiful? Help is here. Use one of the following methods to get that sink clean and shiny in a snap.

You should clean your stainless steel sink about once a week or as needed. The first three of the following cleaning methods involve natural, everyday products, and all are free from harsh chemicals and abrasives.

  • Olive oil: Simply put olive oil on a cloth and rub it all over the sink and fixtures. Then go over it again with another dry cloth. Your sink will be clean, shiny and free of water spots.
  • Vinegar: You can spray on a solution of vinegar and water, which will remove water spots. Then wipe everything down with a dry rag. Don't worry; the vinegar smell evaporates quickly.
  • Baking soda: Just dissolve 2 teaspoons baking soda in a cup of water. Use a sponge to clean the sink with this solution, using a circular motion. Rinse and dry the sink.
  • Soft Scrub: Purchase Soft Scrub that is bleach-free. Follow the instructions on the container to clean your sink. Rinse and dry with a cloth or paper towel.
  • Powdered cleanser: Purchase a powdered sink cleanser such as Comet, Ajax, or Bar Keeper's Friend. Follow label instructions. This isn't as convenient as the other options above, but it'll get your sink really clean.
  • Stainless steel polish: This comes in a can and is sprayed onto the sink. Follow instructions on the container. This stuff is great because it cleans off grease, food, and water stains. It also polishes the sink to a high shine and even deposits a protective layer to keep grime from building up.

Keep in mind that some tools (like steel wool) are abrasive and can scratch the sink, and bleach- or chloride-based products are too harsh, so be careful what comes into contact with your sink.

To keep your sink looking its best, wipe it out once a day or after each use. Use a dabbing action with a towel. This will prevent water spots and keep the steel shining.
