Cleaning Your Vacuum Cleaner

A lot of dust, hair, and dirt goes through your vacuum cleaner whenever you use it. Of course it's going to get a bit dirty itself. You will need to clean it periodically, and I'm not just talking about emptying out the dust or cleaning the filter. Since cleaning your vacuum will make it last longer and function better, it will save you time and money in the long run. So what are you waiting for?

1. Unplug vacuum. First check the bag and empty it if it's over 1/3 or 1/2 full. If you have a bagless vac, empty the bin or tray. If too much dust accumulates in these areas, your vacuum will be less effective. It will also wear out the vacuum faster because it has to work harder to get the air to circulate.
2. Turn vacuum on its side so that the bottom is accessible. Remove the bottom plate so that you can access the inner parts of the vacuum. If it's attached by screws, you'll need a screwdriver.
3. Remove the brush roll and clean it out with your fingers over a wastebasket. Be sure to get all strings or hairs, which can jam up the roll. Use a scissors or seam ripper to remove them if they're wound tightly around it.
4. Check the bearings on the sides of the brush roll. Remove them and clean them out if the axle doesn't spin as freely as it should. You can also apply lubrication to help them spin better. Replace brush roll.
5. Inspect the vacuum's belt for damage or wear. Stretch it with your finger to make sure it's still taut. Replace it if necessary. Otherwise, make sure it's in the correct position. The belt should be replaced every year, although it may be more or less often, depending on use. Replace the bottom plate.
6. Clean out the filter by rapping it sharply against the side of a wastebasket (do this outdoors because of the flying dust). You may be able to clean your filter with running water if it's made of foam or plastic. If your filter is old or really dirty, consider replacing it.
7. Wipe down the outside of your vacuum with a wet rag. It can get pretty dusty after a while.

A vacuum cleaner doesn't need a lot of upkeep, but doing these simple things will extend its life span and save you from having to make expensive repairs. Your machine will be more efficient, which means that your home will be cleaner.
