Cleaning Your Living Room

Summary: Cleaning high-traffic rooms in your house, like your living room, seems like a long chore. Following these easy steps will help you keep that room in good cleanliness.

Whether you live in an apartment or a house, your household probably contains one main room such as the living room. This is the room with all of the activity and, hence, the room that gets dirty and cluttered the easiest. Between the foot paths and entertaining with food, your living room gets dirty pretty fast.

Because it does get dirty so fast, that means you should clean your living room more regularly than you do other rooms in the house, especially if you have guests over frequently. I clean my living room once per week and I get medium traffic through there weekly. My cleaning routine includes dusting, vacuuming/mopping, polishing and using disinfectant on surfaces. My routine is fairly automatic now that I've done it for so many years but there is a particular way this room should be cleaned.

  1. Always dust first. You should always dust your room first. This includes dusting pictures, sculptures, television sets and other consoles, coffee tables, bookshelves and window sills. The reason why you dust first is to move all of the large particles off of the surfaces that either a mop, broom or vacuum cleaner can't get to on their own. I like to use Swiffers to collect the dust with. It captures the smaller particles in the fibers and moves the larger particles onto the floor for later pick up.
  2. Clean the glass. I clean anything glass next for the same reason I dust first: it shifts large particles downwards for pick up with mops, brooms and vacuums. Windex is a simple enough cleaner for the job.
  3. Polish. Always polish your wood furniture weekly if you can. My coffee table is solid wood and I use End Dust to remove dust particles and keep the surface clean. The polish also helps keep particles off of the surface better than if you didn't polish at all.
  4. Vacuum, mop or sweep. The last step to cleaning any room is to always vacuum, mop or sweep. Since you've pushed all of the larger particles onto the floor, you want to pick them up and throw them out.

Cleaning your living room is a fairly important task to accomplish weekly because it is the entryway to your household. Simple steps like those listed above are a great way to help keep your living room in tip top shape for your family and your guests.
