Cleaning Bamboo Flooring

Summary: Bamboo flooring is a great addition to any room. Simple cleaning will help keep it looking as new as the day it was installed.

Wood flooring makes a room look more sophisticated and modern. A lot of people now opt to put bamboo flooring in their homes as opposed to linoleum or Pergo. It's inexpensive, durable and easy to maintain. My condo had cement flooring but it was easily scratched and was very cold in the wintertime. I opted to have bamboo flooring laid down and I have been very happy with my choice ever since.

Unlike regular wood flooring, laminate flooring or linoleum flooring, bamboo flooring barely requires any maintenance. A simple cleaning and no polishing or buffing helps to keep it in shape. When I had the flooring installed, the installers made sure I understood how to clean it as certain chemicals can do more damage than good. I made a small list of things to do to clean it and use it every time I clean it.

  • Sweeping. Usually a quick once-over with a Swiffer will help keep the flooring in decent enough shape from day to day. However, before cleaning the bamboo, I will always run a vacuum cleaner or a broom over the surface to pick up the excess dirt and debris.
  • Washing. Washing bamboo flooring is less complicated than having other flooring. For one thing, it doesn't warp etc. like other floorings so it does not require polishing. Resilience to sunlight and heavy-traffic are built in qualities, too. My flooring installers recommended cleaning the bamboo with warm water and some liquid dish soap. Not only is this simple and easy but the flooring doesn't require multiple clean water rinsings.
  • Miscellaneous. One thing I've found is that running a humidifier from time to time will help keep the moisture in the bamboo and make it last a lot longer. Although it's built to withstand heavy traffic, it's always a good idea to help expand the life so that you keep future maintenance down.

Bamboo flooring is a great way to help sophisticate your home. It's durable, scratch proof and easy to maintain. If you install this in your home, you will find that a simple cleaning will help keep it looking new. I tend to clean my flooring at least three times per month depending on the traffic in the room. Darker flooring covers dirt and debris a bit better but the color you choose will unarguably make your room look great.
