Cleaning Corian

Summary: Corian is a wonderful man-made material that can be used just about everywhere in the home. Not only is Corian an extremely durable solid-surface material, it can be an attractive and inexpensive alternative to granite countertops. However, just because Corian is a durable and easy-to-clean material doesn't mean that you don't have to take some time to clean it. Here are the best ways to clean the Corian surfaces in your home.

Corian, like granite or marble, can come in a number of different styles and finishes. Each of which is going to require its own unique way of cleaning and polishing. Even though Corian is a wonderfully durable and easy to clean material, it doesn't mean that you are free from having to take care of it. Here is how you can take care of your Corain, no matter how it is being used, or what type of finish it has.

Matte Finish

With matte finished Corian is being cleaned most often with hot soapy water. However, for the tougher stains you can actually use cleaners that might be considered harsh or abrasive, the best way to get these stains out is to treat them as they appear. For those stains that you haven't been able to get to in time, use a mildly abrasive cleaner and also a mild bleach to disinfect the surface. To achieve a shine, simply buff the surface to a dull shine. Matte finishes don't have as bright of a shine, so don't be surprised if you can't get your surface "super-shiny."

Semi-Gloss Finish

When cleaning the semi-gloss finish most of the same methods can be taken that you used on the matte finish. However, you will want to use a very mild abrasive for those stubborn stains. As with the high-gloss finish, you will need to stick with something that is soft, such as a sponge, to scrub away those stubborn stains that don't want to come up easily. In order to enhance the shine on this type of finish, buff the surface with a soft cotton towel until it is dried and shiny.

High-Gloss Finish

Unlike when you are cleaning matte or semi-gloss finished Corian when trying to clean high-gloss finished Corian a little more care is required. You can still clean and remove stains by using warm soapy water. However, unlike with the other kinds of finish you need to use something a little softer to scrub away those stains. Use a soft cotton washcloth or even a sponge, but nothing that is more abrasive since scratches will appear more easily in finishes that are really shiny. To bring the counter back to a high shine, though, you need to use products that are either endorsed by the manufacturer or made specifically for Corian countertops.
