Removing Calcium Buildup from Granite Shower Floors

Summary: If the granite flooring in your shower has started to look cloudy from calcium build-up, it is possible to clean it. Follow these tips to help you through the process.

Granite is a beautiful stone that can be used throughout your home. It is made up of several different minerals and is one of the hardest stones in the world. It is quite popular and can have many uses. You can use it for counters, tiles, flooring, and more.

Although granite looks great as flooring for your shower and in other parts of the bathroom, placing this stone in constant contact with water can pose a problem. Hard water can cause ugly calcium build-up on granite, leaving a white, cloudy film over the surface. This film can't simply be wiped away with any cleaner you might have. You will have to take certain measures to remove and prevent this irritating build-up.

If you have noticed a build-up of calcium on the granite flooring of your shower, don't despair. There are several options you can choose from when deciding how to go about cleaning your shower floor. Here are some ways that you can remove those nasty deposits:

  • Try out a calcium remover on the granite surface. These products, which can be found in most grocery or hardware stores, can dissolve the deposits away and leave your surfaces looking great again. Take care to follow the instructions carefully to avoid any damage to the surface. Also, be sure that the product is safe for the granite surface and won't damage it.
  • Each day, go over the granite surfaces in your shower with special granite cleaner. Apply and go over with a squeegee or wipe with a cloth. This can help prevent the development of calcium build-up. There are also wipes on the market made just for granite. These are a quick and convenient solution.
  • Try simply washing the area with dish soap and water and scrub with a brush or sponge. This may require more work than it would with harsher products. Some soaps can leave residue behind, so if this happens just go over the surface with a granite-cleaning wipe once you are done cleaning. You can also clean with just water, but if you do try to use distilled water, since it won't leave mineral deposits behind.

Although it may seem like a hassle at times to have granite surfaces, cleaning them is not very difficult. While you do have to take special care of these areas of your home, the beauty and durability they add is definitely worth it.
