Remove Carpet Indentations

Summary: Whether you are moving or simply moving furniture, invariably you'll find indentations left in the carpet from the furniture. While technically these don't make your carpet dirty, they do not look attractive at all. If you would like to make your home or office look just a little more tidy when you rearrange the furniture, then look no further—here's how.

How many times have you moved the furniture around in your home or office and repositioned everything exactly the way you wanted it, only to find unattractive depressions all over your carpet? While carpet indentations left from furniture do not actually make your room dirty, they definitely make it look just a little more untidy than it would normally.

Removing carpet indentations is something anyone can do. Listed here are some of the most effective, and time-proven methods for removing carpet indentations. Best of all, by using these methods you will accomplish two things. First, you won't have to wait forever to have the carpet "fix itself." Second, your room will look more appealing and tidy.

  • Ice. Take a few ice cubes from your freezer and crush them in a Ziploc bag. After crushing, place some of the ice cube dust into each indentation and allow it to melt. Then, use either a stiff brush or vacuum cleaner to restore the carpet to its proper shape. When using a brush, be careful to not scrub too hard or damage the carpeting. If you are using a vacuum cleaner, make sure that you use one that can vacuum up water, so you do not ruin your expensive appliance.
  • Steam iron. Using a steam iron will often help immensely in removing indentations. Plug the steam iron into the wall, turn it on and hold it over the indented area, allowing the steam to penetrate the bent nap. Once the nap is thoroughly saturated, turn the iron off and set it aside. Use a stiff brush (or water-safe vacuum cleaner) to restore the nap to its proper shape.
  • Spray bottle. Slightly dampen the indented area with a spray bottle and allow it to sit for ten to fifteen minutes before going over the area with a vacuum. Some of the indents that have been there for a very long time may need two or three applications before the depressions have been completely removed.
  • Coin. Probably the simplest method, by simply holding a coin vertically (on edge) between two fingers and rubbing it back and forth over the nap can often remove the indentation. However, if you use this method, you may need to do it a few times (three or four) before the depression is fully removed.
