Bathroom Cleaners

Summary: Is there really anything more disgusting than a dirty bathroom? Help keep your bathroom sparkling clean by choosing the best possible bathroom cleaners. Here is everything you need to know to cut through all the manufacturer hype and help you choose exactly the cleaners you need.

For many people, choosing bathroom cleaners can be an extremely personal choice. After all, we are talking about the bathroom. While it may be a personal choice, there are some simple guidelines that anyone can use to help choose the best possible bathroom cleaners.

  • Multipurpose cleaners. Considering that the average bathroom will be one of the smallest rooms in the house, it stands to reason that there isn't an excessive amount of storage space. As such, it only makes sense that you will wish to keep the amount of cleaners to the minimum in the bathroom. Multipurpose cleaners were made for this role. For example, products like Windex Multipurpose Cleaner are great for cleaning the sinks, faucets, shower doors, and mirrors that can be found in most bathrooms. Why buy more than one product (and waste money) when one will do the same job?
  • Store brands vs. brand names. It's common knowledge that people like to purchase products with which they are familiar, hence the reason brand names are so popular. Before purchasing your next bathroom cleaning supplies, ask yourself one simple question: "Do brand name products work better than store brands?" Generally speaking, the answer is no; store brands will work just as well as the nationally recognized brand names. So, instead of spending around $10 to buy the name brand item, go for the one that only costs $3 or $4—you'll get the same results.
  • Preventative maintenance items. There is the old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and this holds true in the bathroom as well as anywhere else. Keep a few simple "preventative maintenance" items on hand. For instance, a small wipe down towel at each sink, is a good idea. It allows the last person using the sink to dry off the mirror/sink/counter and prevent hard water stains. Using a bottle of 3%—5% peroxide as a disinfectant cleaner will work as well as the more expensive disinfectant spray cleaners, and last longer too. Also, you will want to keep some lime, or hard water descaler/cleaner on hand for those times when you need to do your periodic deep cleaning (some of the best available are Simple Green, Lime Away, and CLR).
  • Tools. Every bathroom should have a few simple tools in their cleaning kits, such as a small plunger, rubber gloves, stiff nylon brushes, and small trash cans with bags. Each of these items can be used in a multitude of ways when cleaning, an example of which is the plunger which can help remove clogs from the toilet, sink, or shower.

Just like with everything else, you can find some products that work better than others, no matter where you by them. Personally, I have had just as many good results with dollar store brands as I have national name brands.

I must say though that I recently helped my inlaws clean their bathroom and they only had dollar store cleaners. I have to admit i wished i had brought some more expensive cleaners as we had to spray several times and a lot more physical work was required to do the job that some cleaners like Tilex do with just spraying and rinsing!
