Hot Tub Cleaning

Summary: Does your hot tub have scum? Make it disappear with some forethought and a little effort. Hot tub cleaning isn't actually that hard, as long as you know what to do. Learn how here.

When you find your hot tub to be dirty, you will need to take either an analysis of the chemical levels, or a sample of the scum in your tub to your local pool store. Talk to the experts there about what products you will need to buy in order to clean your hot tub. Once you have all the necessary materials, you can begin cleaning.

Apply your cleaner to the hot tub, scrubbing with something that is not very abrasive such as a mitt, which is basically a mitten made of latex and attached to a scrubbing pad. This is necessary since you don't want to scratch your hot tub's shell. If you are unsure, test the mitt or other tool on a part of your hot tub that is not too easy to notice and see if it leaves any marks. Once you have rinsed the inside of your hot tub thoroughly, you can work on cleaning the tubes and filtration parts.

You probably got a product at the pool store that will clean your hot tub's fittings and will probably be as simple to use as pouring the product into the water before you drain your hot tub and running the jets for a while so it has time to circulate throughout the system.

If you need to get into contact with the insides of the hot tub in order to get to things like the filter, completely turn off your filtration and pumping systems before you start cleaning or you could get hurt! Then you can blast your filter with water at a high-pressure, something that can be done with a hose fitted with a nozzle (like you would find at a self-service car wash).

Last, you will need to wipe down your hot tub's cover (if it has one) and the skirting. Keep your hot tub water in good condition by adding sanitizing or chlorine tablets weekly and keep an oil-absorbing sponge floating in your tub.
