Dealing with Cigarette Odor when Visiting

Summary: Hate the smell of cigarettes but have to visit someone who smokes? Here are some things you can do about the smell while you're with them.

Cigarette odor is dreadful. It can make you sick, especially if you have asthma or another breathing problem, and the fact that you smell it means that the smoke from the cigarettes is still present. Now, if the odor is difficult to bear, one of the first suggestions is to try to keep away from any smokers while on your visit. I know that is an obvious idea, but it is one worth bearing in mind if the smell really does bother you.

If there is an air filter of any kind (stand alone or even in the air condition unit), be sure it gets changed and/or cleaned out so you are not recycling the problem into your air supply. Here is another obvious idea: remove ashtrays and bags from trash cans that have had ashtrays emptied into them.

If you are in a hotel room that smells of smoke, use the in-room coffee pot to boil water with citrus peels in it to remove the odor. Consider using baking soda as a deodorizer in your room, though this works much better if you give it plenty of time to work. An uncovered bowl of vinegar can also remove odor, but it takes a few days to work, and I am hoping you do not have to be in the presence of such a nasty odor for that long.

One more thing can help if you have any control over your environment: clean the light bulbs. (Think about those incense and oil heaters that work by being on or around light bulbs...it is like that with smoke residue.) You may consider bringing your own filtration unit with you for your bedroom if you are staying with someone who smokes inside the house. You can open the windows of your quarters, but be sure there are not smokers outside when you do so, or you will only get more odor in your room.

If you have the time, clean or have a maid re-clean your room. Cigarette smoke leaves gunk all over and a good cleaning can really help a lot. If you are around a smoker who insists on smoking around you, you may wish to invest in an electrical ionic air purifier to have running at least while the person smokes. Also, never forget that there is always the option of using Febreze, if it is only the smell about which you are concerned.
