Save Money and Water When Doing the Laundry

Summary: Doing laundry can actually get kind of expensive. This is a pain to have to deal with, but fortunately there are ways to cut back on cost.

When you think about it, doing your laundry can be expensive and use a lot of water. Especially if you're a student and need to use the launder mat or other paid laundry services, you need to find effective and financially efficient ways to clean your clothes. If you can simply pay more attention to your laundry habits and plan accordingly, saving money and water when doing your laundry won't be a problem!

Preserve the cleanliness of your clothes as long as possible by treating stains when you first get them. The Tide Pen is a great tool for quickly removing small stains that would otherwise necessitate a run through the washer. By eliminating smaller stains, you can cut down on the number of laundry loads you have to do by cutting down on the amount of laundry ends up in your dirty clothes hamper.

Use some common sense when putting together your laundry loads. Try and wait as long as possible before washing your clothes so you can accrue a decent sized load. Besides the fact this will reduce the amount of water you use, it will also mean fewer laundry days! Also, if you pre-soak heavily soiled clothes, you won't need to rewash them, saving even more water.

Another tactic you could take is to do your laundry later at night. Electricity is cheaper in off-peak hours, so plan to load your dryer between 10:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. This may be more inconvenient, but if you're really into frugality, you might want to give this tip a try. Also, don't forget to clean out your filter before flipping the switch. Your clothes will dry faster, and you won't have to battle lint.

Saving money and water when you do your laundry isn't hard; it just takes a certain level of conscientiousness. Be aware of the size of your loads and make sure that you're not doing any unnecessary laundry. Good luck with frugal laundry!
