Cleaning and Sanitizing Sealed Tea Kettles

Summary: Teapots and kettles are great things to have in the kitchen, but they are a little difficult to know if you have gotten them cleaned and properly sanitized. Here is how you can properly accomplish this task with little effort on your part, simply follow these simple steps, and your chore is done.

I have noticed with my own tea kettle (or teapot) that it is really easy to clean the outside, as opposed to the interior. The reason for this is that I have one of the models that have only a small hole where you can pour the water in and out. As you can imagine this makes both cleaning and inspection of the interior very difficult. I have found that by using the following method I get a clean and sanitized cooking utensil with extremely little work on my part.

Surprisingly, to properly clean your tea kettle from any lime scale buildup or other nasty contaminant, all that you will need is two or three ingredients to ensure a properly accomplished job. You must use either lemon juice or white vinegar; the other ingredient necessary is simply water. Mix either of the first two ingredients with the water to create an excellent cleaning solution that will ensure that your tea kettle is lime-scale free.

Simply pour the mixture into the kettle and bring to a boil. Once the teapot is happily whistling away, remove the kettle from the heat and set it aside for two hours. After the time has passed, pour out the solution and refill it with clean water. Bring the pot to a boil again. This should remove any lingering smell of either vinegar or lemon. In the event that it does not, simply repeat the water boiling process until the smell is removed.

The process for sanitizing the interior of your tea kettle is even simpler (if that is possible) than that of cleaning it. To do this, all that you need to do is simply boil some water in the tea kettle for about 20 minutes. You may need to refill the teakettle during that time period in order to prevent scorching or boil off, but that is not difficult to accomplish. It is strongly recommended that you do this a minimum of at least one time a week, and after every instance of cleaning the pot. This will ensure that your teapot is properly cleaned and sanitized, giving it a longer life and you healthier service.
