Remove Cat Urine Stains

Written by Karen Bates (last updated July 12, 2021)

Cats can make wonderful pets, and they are loved by pet owners all over the world. These creatures are generally independent but can also develop a strong bond with their owner.

Taking care of a cat is fairly simple, but there are also a few things that new cat owners should know. Cats must be fed the right food, be groomed regularly, and given enough attention from their owner. Since most cats learn to use the litter box, you must also clean this box often so that the cat won't reject the box and use another spot for a bathroom.

If your cat does have an accident outside of the litter box, you will need to clean up the mess as soon as possible. Cat urine has a strong smell and can stain some surfaces, so cleaning it up correctly is vital. With certain tools and cleaners, you can make the job of removing cat urine quick and easy.

To remove cat urine, try the following ideas for the best results:

  • If your cat urinates on a hard surface such as tile or wood, start by wiping up the mess as soon as possible to avoid damage to the floor. Next, use a cleaner to disinfect the surface. Spray the cleaner, then wipe away thoroughly. You can also try natural cleaners such as a vinegar solution to help clean.
  • For carpet messes, dab at the stain with paper towels to remove as much liquid as possible. Using carpet cleaner, spray the spot according to the bottle's directions, then blot up the excess cleaner. You might want to use a cleaner made specifically for cleaning up after cats, since these contain enzymes that discourage future urination in the same spot.
  • You may find that your cat has eliminated on fabric such as a bedspread or clothing. In this case, dab up the excess, flush the spot with water, then wash in the washing machine in cold water. Adding vinegar to the wash may help eliminate the urine odor.
  • If your cat leaves a urine stain on upholstery, quickly blot the liquid from the fabric if it is fresh. Wash using a gentle cleaner meant for upholstery, and dry the spot as soon as possible after cleaning.

For older, set-in stains and odors, the above methods may be less effective. In this case, consider using a carpet cleaning machine to remove the mess most effectively.
