Spring Cleaning Your Office
Written by Lee Wyatt (last updated March 19, 2012)
Most, if not all, people think that you actually need to stop and wait until the spring time before you do any spring cleaning. The truth is that this couldn't be more wrong. If there is one area of the home or work that can use a periodic spring cleaning (no matter the time of year) then it has to be the office. If you are interested in spring cleaning your office, then all you really need to do is follow these simple guidelines.
- Set aside the some time. The best way to get any type of cleaning done you need to set aside the time to get the work done. This can be five minutes, or it could be a couple of days, but you need to set aside the time where you will only be doing that work. This will allow you to be focused on the work at hand, and help ensure that you don't get distracted by other concerns.
- Focus on one thing at a time. When you do begin spring cleaning your office, focus on one task at a time. Do not try to do everything at once, or you can easily find yourself overwhelmed and getting absolutely no work done. If it helps, make a list of all the things that you need to do to get your office cleaned, and then do each of the items that you wrote down, but do them separately. As you complete each task cross it off and move on to the next one.
- Separate and organize. As you are straightening things up in your office, take the time to go through everything and separate your stuff. Ideally, you will separate the items into three piles. The first pile is for everything that you don't need (and don't want) in your office. The second pile is for the trash, while the third pile should be made up of things that you need to keep in the office. Organize all the items that you will be keeping in your office in a way that will make sense to you. As you can imagine this is probably one of the more difficult aspects of spring cleaning your office.
- Get rid of what you don't want. Once you have finished separating and organizing what you will be leaving in your office it is time to begin getting rid of everything else. If the things that you are going to be getting rid of are trash, then simply dispose of everything properly. However, if the items that you are planning on getting rid of are still usable in any way then you should consider donating them to Goodwill or some similar organization.
- Maintain your efforts. Now that you have finished with your spring cleaning efforts, you really only have one thing left to do. That is, you will need to maintain your efforts to keep your office clean. If you do not, then you can easily find yourself repeating the process of cleaning and organizing your office all over again in just a few months.
