Tub Cleaner

Written by Karen Bates (last updated September 21, 2020)

All because you use a tub to stay clean doesn't mean that the tub stays clean. As odd as this is to consider, you can see that it is true just by looking at a tub that hasn't been scrubbed in a while. Over time, the bath tub can get a film of dirt, soap scum, and hard water deposits—all this just from bathing!

To make matters worse, the build-up on the tub is pretty difficult to clean. Without a good cleaner and some work on your part, you won't be able to get the tub very clean. Of course, the easiest way to clean the tub is by preventing the dirty film in the first place. This requires regular cleaning and wiping to discourage the dirt from sticking. But if it's been a while since you gave the tub a good scrub, it's probably time to get to work.

To get started you will need the right knowledge and tools. Here are some ideas for getting the job done as efficiently as possible:

  • You will need something to scrub the tub with. This could be a sponge, a scrub brush, a rag, or whatever you prefer. Don't use something that could scratch and damage the tub, but make sure the tool is strong enough to effectively remove filmy build-up.
  • Take everything out of the tub before you start cleaning, such as soap, shampoo, or any other bottles you store in this area. Wipe away or rinse any surface dirt or messes. Now you can focus on cleaning the build-up that is stuck to the tub.
  • Start cleaning the built-up dirt using your preferred cleaning method. You can use tub cleaner, multi-purpose cleaner, bleach cleaner, or even a homemade natural cleaner. To make your own cleaner, you can use vinegar and baking soda to assist you with the task. Apply the cleaner to the tub and, using your scrubbing tool, begin scrubbing away the filmy layer inside the tub. You may need to go back and work on particularly stubborn areas with either a special cleaner or more scrubbing.
  • Rinse away the cleaner and all the dirt you just scrubbed away down the drain. Be sure you get it all thoroughly washed away.
  • If you have any tile around your tub, you may need to take special measures to clean it. For instance, you might need tile cleaner and a small brush to clean the grout successfully.

Although it can take some time and energy, it is definitely worth the effort it takes to get a sparkling clean tub.
