For those who own guns, properly caring for and maintaining this weapon is of utmost importance. To be sure that the gun will work properly, there are certain things you must do to ensure it continues to look and operate like new.

Regular maintenance of your gun will help keep it in good condition, but just what does this entail? Keeping your firearm clean is one concern you should address. How often you will need to clean your weapon depends on several factors, but it's safe to say that giving the gun a good cleaning each time after you go shooting will help prevent potential problems and will keep the gun looking and working great. A clean gun is more likely to work as it should, so make it a habit to clean the gun thoroughly.

Exactly how you go about cleaning a gun varies from gun to gun and person to person, but no matter what your situation you should have a gun cleaning kit at the ready for when you need to clean your weapon. A gun cleaning kit includes all the components you will need to clean all parts of the gun and prevent potential problems related to dirty build-up.

Gun cleaning kits come in different sizes and include various items to assist in cleaning your weapon. A gun cleaning kit should include some basic items to ensure successful cleaning, including the following:

  • Oil. This will lubricate the parts of the gun so that everything works smoothly.
  • Solvent. This will help remove fouling from the gun. Use a brush to apply the solvent.
  • Cleaning rod. This tool allows you to clean the gun using different attachments. You can attach a bore brush or patches to this rod to help you clean.
  • Brush. Use a brush to apply solvent and remove any residue, dirt, or fouling in the bore of the gun barrel. Your kit should include a bore-cleaning brush that can be attached to the cleaning rod. These may be made of plastic, stainless steel, or plastic.
  • Safety gear. Although a store-bought kit may not include it, safety gear is important when cleaning your gun. Use gloves, the proper eye protection, and either a cloth or newspaper to protect the surface you will be working on.

Before attempting to clean your gun, make sure you are familiar with how to take it apart and put it back together again to ensure you do this correctly. Be sure that while cleaning your gun, you work in a well-ventilated area.

Firstly, eject ALL ammo from your firearm.

Secondly, CHECK that your firearm is disarmed.

Thirdly, you can now clean your firearm.

Simple.

By the way, I am in Australia, where this topic is quite irrelevant. We do, however, have the occasional incident.
