Wheel Cleaning

Written by Karen Bates (last updated July 24, 2023)

Most of us recognize that proper vehicle maintenance is crucial to the well being of a car. Regular oil changes and servicing are necessary to keep the car running smoothly, and washing and detailing the car inside and out can help it continue to look like new. Taking little steps to maintain your car can end up making a big difference overall.

Although it can be easy to overlook, cleaning the different parts of your car can keep it looking beautiful and, in some cases, prevent potential problems from occurring. Even if you wash your car on a regular basis, you may still be forgetting to clean the less-obvious areas of your vehicle, such as the wheels for instance.

You can clean and detail your car's wheels thoroughly without too much effort on your part. All you need are a few tools, the right cleaners, and a little time to get the job done. Make sure you don't overlook this task, as neglected wheels can cause problems with your car. As brake dust builds up on the wheels, it can become corrosive and eat away at surfaces. Instead of letting this problem occur over time, you can clean frequently to rid the wheels of harmful build-up.

To clean your wheels, you will need to take the proper steps. Try these ideas to get the best results possible:

  • Use a wheel cleaner to effectively clean build-up from the wheels. Select one that is safe for your particular wheel type. For instance, some cleaners are meant for chrome, while others are safe for any variety.
  • Apply the cleaner, and scrub it on using a brush. You will probably want to use a wheel brush that is designed specifically for this cleaning task. Spray on the cleaner, then remove dirt and build-up with a vigorous scrubbing.
  • Be sure to rinse each wheel before the cleaner has a chance to dry completely. After a thorough rinse, remember to dry the wheels with a towel to prevent potential streaking.
  • If desired, apply wax to your wheels, or use a tire dressing to help protect the wheels. Doing this can also give your wheels a lovely shine.

When washing your car, make sure you clean the wheels first. This ensures that grimy dirt from the wheels doesn't spray onto your clean car during the process. Do the wheels first, then move on to cleaning the rest of your vehicle.
