Ironing Clothes without an Iron

Written by Charlotte Wood (last updated December 11, 2023)

There are always those situations when you need an iron but don't have one (like when you're traveling for instance). One of the most frustrating situations, there are ways to mitigate or improve an iron-less situation. It may not be the most ideal situation, but it isn't the worst either. By being innovative and figuring out how best to deal with your rumpled clothes, you'll be able to deal with any iron-lacking circumstance.

The best way to deal with this situation is to steam the wrinkles out of your clothes. If you're in a hotel on vacation or something of the like, you can take out all the clothes you need to be "ironed" and use the bathroom to steam out your clothes. Turn on the shower and make the water scalding hot. Then shut the door and allow the steam in the bathroom to build up, creating an environment where your clothes can effectively steam out the wrinkles.

If you're not on vacation and just don't want to use your iron or iron at all (I know many who hate the task), then there are ways to lessen, if not eliminate, most of your ironing. Pay attention to your laundry cycles, meaning when you hear the dryer go off, immediately go and take the clothes out of the dryer and hang them up. By doing this you allow any dryer-made wrinkles to fall out easily. If you wait too long, then you'll have to suffer the consequences of having the heat from the dryer set in and the consequent wrinkles that you'll be ironing out later. By simply paying more attention to your washer and dryer on laundry day you can avoid so many ironing situations.

Ironing without an iron may seem like a paradox, but it is possible. The result may not be as clean cut and sharp as using the iron with the starch, but it eliminates wrinkles and means you don't have to get out the iron (or find one if you're in a place where you don't have one on hand) and proceed with a somewhat mundane chore. Have fun ironing without the iron!
