Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Written by Karen Bates (last updated June 26, 2023)

There are many jobs around the house that need to be done, but they certainly aren't all popular. Certain tasks can be left undone way longer than they should simply because the job is so undesirable.

Cleaning the toilet is one of the most detested chores there is, and yet the longer you avoid it, the more disgusting and hard to clean it will become. For this reason, it is important to clean the toilet well, and often. Neglecting this job can cause staining and build-up that is very hard to remove.

There is no single correct way to clean the toilet, and what works best will depend on your situation. The only tools you'll really need for the job are a toilet brush and some kind of toilet bowl cleaner. But which cleaner should you try?

You have multiple options when it comes to cleaners for the toilet bowl, and there are a few cleaning methods that are worth trying on a dirty toilet. Here are a few ideas for how to successfully clean a toilet:

  • There are a lot of commercial cleaners at the store for you to choose from. Each of these cleaners boasts various benefits, and some even have special angled tops for easy application. They vary in strength, from mild to very strong, so you should carefully read the label and follow any safety instructions on the bottle. It is a good idea to wear gloves for any toilet-cleaning job.
  • You can get a clean toilet without the use of harsh chemicals. With ingredients you may have already, you can create a cleaning solution that can remove stains and build-up. A great mixture for mild toilet cleaning is some baking soda scrubbed inside the bowl with a brush. You can also use vinegar or lemon juice to help reduce hard water rings or other stains.
  • An acid cleaner is the solution to really difficult jobs. These remove calcium build-up in a matter of seconds or minutes after application, and may not require very much scrubbing. These can be harsh, however, and should not be used without the proper skin protection or before carefully reading any warnings or instructions on the bottle.

No matter how dirty a toilet bowl is, there is likely a cleaner that can take care of the job. Try a few methods and find out which one is the best for cleaning your toilet.
