Organizing Closets

Written by Hettie Woehler (last updated August 14, 2023)

Kids or students attending school or college away from home can benefit from a portable closet. Instead of packing their things into a suitcase and unpacking it at home or at the school or college, the closet may be placed in the car as it is. Creating less crinkles, less handling, and saving packing and unpacking time.

A portable closet is a great option for business men and women, executives, and travelling sales people alike. Reaching their destination just to find their clothes wrinkled and dirty because of dust and being in a suitcase can cause lots of inconvenience or even embarrassment. A portable closet in the back of the car while on the road, enables the traveller to change in the shortest of time on arrival as there is no need to worry about well-ironed, clean and fresh outfits.

Portable closets can be stored and brought out for guests whose visit spreads over a few days. This saves the task of creating space in a closet in the room they will have for the duration of the visit. Simply take it out, wipe with a damp cloth and hang at the outside of an existing closet. The visitors clean it out when they leave, creating less work for you.

When purchasing a portable closet or travel case there are a few things to look for when purchasing these wonderful tools. While there aren't any real hard and fast rules about what you should and shouldn't purchase, there are some guidelines that can help you determine whether you are going to be purchasing the correct item or not. Keep these guidelines in mind when you go to purchase your new portable closet.

  • What is the purpose? Its purpose will determine the size and type of portable closet that you will end up getting. How often will it be used?
  • How do you want it to close? Do you prefer Velcro or zippers to close it? The Velcro ones are nice, but are not dust proof, while zipped closings do not let dust and dirt into the closet. If you prefer Velcro ensure that it is a durable type which will last throughout the lifetime of the closet; a zipper to close the closet, ensure that you buy one with a strong, durable zip.
  • What material do you want? Portable closets can come in a variety of different materials. As such, make sure that you choose one which will work with the room that you plan on putting it into. Portable closets that are going to be used on a more permanent basis should be made of a fairly durable material. For those that aren't going to be used all that often, you can use a material that is less durable, and more easily stored.
