Neat Bedroom Closet

Written by Hettie Woehler (last updated December 28, 2020)

Your bedroom closet is nothing else than a filing cabinet for your clothes. Nobody ever thinks of throwing, or perhaps with more care, placing documents and folders into an unorganized filing cabinet. Here are a few ideas on keeping your bedroom closet in a neat and practical state:

  1. Empty it all out for examination and reorganization. Set aside enough time to start and finish the task. If you are not able to do it in one session, plan the handling of the outstanding part carefully. Replacing things back for the time being, is a definite no-no.
  2. Keep bags and boxes handy to temporary store and sort things you took out of the closet until you return it, or do whatever needs to be done.
  3. Wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth. Thoroughly clean it with the vacuum cleaner. Place shelf paper with a sticky back side on all flat surfaces.
  4. If you haven't worn an item for the last two seasons, some experts say the last season, give anything still in good order to someone else or a charity organization. You may cut it for house-cleaning rags. Gravity and bugs such as moths or the more common carpet beetle are the enemies of your closet. Take precautions' against them immediately. Invest in the bset clothes hangers possible to help keep the shape of the clothes.
  5. Neatly fold items to go onto flat surfaces. To avoid disturbing neatly folded clothes, place them in the drawer with the folded side towards the front.
  6. Shoes should always be placed on a shoe rack. Avoid placing other stuff on top of your shoes, this will prevent ruining their shape and shorten their life.
  7. Replace everything after washing or dry cleaning immediately in the right place. Don't store anything else but clothing in your closet.

In conclusion, remember that you need to do the following things to have a neat bedroom closet. Clean it out completely. Keep a damp cloth and your vacuum cleaner at hand. Use bags or boxes to put everything in while you clean up. Take precautions against bugs, carpet beetles and gravity. Neatly fold items to go onto flat surfaces with the folded side in front for ease of use. Keep shoes off the floor to protected against dust and loosing shape. Get rid of as many unused items as possible. Replace all items immediately after washing or dry cleaning.
