Grass Stain

Written by Karen Bates (last updated September 13, 2021)

If you spend a lot of time outside, odds are good that you will end up with all kinds of nasty stains on your clothing. Stains that show up after spending time outdoors may be difficult to remove, and can require special attention.

One tough stain that is likely to show up on your clothes after spending time outdoors comes from grass. Grass stains are especially common on pants, but can occur on sports uniforms, tee shirts, and other clothing garments. This ugly green stain can seem impossible to remove, despite your scrubbing and laundering, and you may want to give up and throw out the stained clothing item.

Cleaning grass stains does not have to be an impossible task, however. It is important when treating this kind of stain that you use the correct method to ensure the best chance of spot removal.

If you have a tough grass stain that you can't seem to remove, try one of the following ideas to get rid of it:

  • Using a sponge, wipe the stain with some denatured alcohol. Once the alcohol dries, rinse the fabric with water and wash as you normally would in the washing machine.
  • For a natural cleaning option, try using vinegar to clean. Mix regular vinegar with warm water, and then rub onto the stain before running the garment through the washing machine.
  • There are some commercial grass stain removers on the market. These cleaners are formulated specifically for taking out tough grass stains on clothes.
  • Pre-treat the stain using laundry detergent powder mixed with a little water. Scrub this onto the stain before washing normally.
  • Wet the spot, then work a little dish soap into it with a rubbing motion. Rinse with water, and then wash in the washing machine like usual. If the stain persists, repeat this step again.
  • Wash the garment with bleach if this is safe for the fabric. This should lighten or eliminate the grass stain entirely.

Before you try to wash anything, be sure to carefully read the labels on clothing before trying to remove grass stains. You may need to take special measures on particular fabrics that can't be washed normally, otherwise you run the risk of damaging the item. If you have an item of clothing that is dry clean only, be sure to take it to a professional cleaner for washing.
