Keyboard Cleaners

Written by Karen Bates (last updated October 4, 2021)

Even though it can be easy to forget, your computer requires cleaning every so often to keep it in great shape. If it has been a while since you last took the time to maintain your computer's parts, you may notice that your machine isn't working as efficiently as it could.

A perfect example of this has to do with the computer keyboard. You probably use the computer keyboard every day, but it is likely that you don't pay much attention to this device. You may, however, want to clean and sanitize the keyboard more frequently if you consider how dirty it can get. Germs, dirt, sticky spots, crumbs, and other residue can get left on the keyboard's surface, and you will come in contact with this each time you type! Don't worry, though. Cleaning the keyboard doesn't take very long, and only requires a few tools to accomplish the task.

The first step to keyboard cleanliness is to avoid a mess in the first place. This means keeping food and drink away from your keyboard to prevent crumbs and spills. It can also help to wash your hands before typing, since any dirt or oils will transfer from your skin to the keys as you type.

To clean the keyboard, begin by cleaning under the keys using canned air, or an air duster. This is one of the most effective keyboard cleaners available, since it allows you to remove dirt, dust, and crumbs from under the keys without needing to remove the keys themselves. The canned air will supply a strong puff of air that will dislodge and blow away debris inside the keyboard.

Remember to sanitize the keyboard next, and wipe away any stuck-on grime. Wipe the keys (with the keyboard unplugged) with just a little anti-bacterial cleaner on a rag or paper towel. If you find a stubborn film on the sides of the keys, use a cotton swab and a little rubbing alcohol to remove it.

Of course, if your keyboard is in really bad shape you might need to remove the keys and wash them. While the keys are out, you can also wipe out the inside of the keyboard. If the keyboard is just too disgusting, however, it may be time to replace it with a new, totally clean keyboard. Just remember to do you best to prevent messes and keep your new device in great shape.
