Choosing a Cleaning Service

Written by Charlotte Wood (last updated November 9, 2020)

When you venture into the crazy, topsy-turvy world of adulthood, you come into contact with so many new responsibilities and obligations. One of the big new adventures you'll have is the adventure of coming to own your own home. Besides the mortgage payments associated with owning your own home, you also have to deal with things like painting, household repairs, mowing the lawn, maybe moving furniture, and cleaning.

Unfortunately houses do not clean themselves, and so you need to stay on top of maintaining the cleanliness and overall quality of your house. There are a few different options for you when it comes to going about cleaning your house, which include cleaning it yourself, or if you either don't like or don't have time to clean your house yourself, you can hire a cleaning service to come and clean your house for you. If you choose the latter, then here is how you choose the best cleaning service for you.

You fist need to determine your cleaning needs. Do you need basic dusting and vacuuming? Do you need specific cleaning of something in your (like carpets or upholstery for example)? Do you need your bathrooms cleaned? Do you need your floors mopped? All these are questions to ask yourself when choosing what cleaning service to go with when choosing a cleaning service. Once you know your needs, you can then look in the yellow pages, contact various agencies and find a handful that meet your cleaning needs.

Once you have a handful of options, you can then start comparing. Obviously price is an issue, but really what you want is quality, so the best thing you can do is look for ratings a particular agency may have on its services (if the service has a website, there's a good possibility there will be customer ratings on the quality of the service received). One of the best ways I've found to settle on a cleaning service is to go by word of mouth. Talk with your friends in the PTA, at the gym, at church, and see who they have clean their houses (if they use a service that is). The best way to decide whether or not a company is quality is to see what the general consensus is on the institution.

If word-of-mouth is hard to come by in your neighborhood or circle of friends, then you can always have a trial run with the cleaning service; most cleaning services have some kind of test run incentive price anyway, and so you should take advantage of any first-time offer they may have. If you like the work of the cleaning service, then continue with them, and if you're not impressed then don't feel obligated to continue your relationship with that cleaning service.
