Porcelain Tile Cleaning

Written by Karen Bates (last updated February 28, 2022)

Porcelain tile is an elegant and beautiful addition to any home. It is a versatile type of tile than can be used in many ways, such as flooring, on walls, and as counter-top. This high-quality tile is a popular choice for those who need something strong, beautiful, and long lasting.

To keep porcelain tile in the best condition possible, it is important to properly maintain it. This involves certain cleaning methods that can get rid of dirt, stains, and other build-up on the surface of your tile and grout. Exactly how you go about cleaning your porcelain tile depends on if it is unfinished, textured, or polished. For best results, take what kind of tile you have in your home into account before you begin the cleaning process.

To get clean tile, you should figure out what kind of porcelain tile you have first. Once you have determined your tile type, you can try one of the following cleaning procedures to get beautiful porcelain tile:

  • Unpolished Porcelain. Start by sweeping the tile floor thoroughly to remove loose dirt. Use a cleaning solution to saturate the floor, then let it sit for a few minutes without letting it dry up. You can scrub stained areas with a brush to remove any stuck-on, stubborn spots. Use a mop wet with plain water to rinse away the cleaning solution.
  • Polished Porcelain. Vacuum or sweep loose dirt from the floor. Use a mop to apply cleaning solution to the tile, then rinse with clean water.
  • Textured Porcelain. Use a soft-bristled broom to sweep up any dirt or dust. You may need to sweep in two directions to ensure you get all the dirt from the textured tile. Next, cover the surface with a cleaning solution and allow to sit. Scrub any stains if needed using a sponge or scrub brush, scrubbing in both directions. Rinse the tile thoroughly.

Remember to keep up your tile by cleaning it regularly. This means wiping up high-traffic areas often, and sweeping or vacuuming on a regular basis to keep things from getting too dirty. In some cases, it may also be beneficial to lay rugs over the tile to prevent too much wear on the porcelain surface.

If you notice any damage to your tile, or come across a stain that you just can't remove on your own, you may want to talk to a professional cleaner to help you take care of the problem.
