Washing Lace and Other Delicates

Written by Lee Wyatt (last updated October 3, 2022)

Washing your lacy items is sometimes a puzzling task because you're never quite sure how to do it. Do you hand wash? Can you machine wash? Can you wash at all? And then when it comes to your delicates, you want to make sure you wash them the right way so the initial quality is maintained. How do you do it? Fortunately the process actually isn't that difficult and you can end up with nice, clean delicates that you can keep clean!

When it comes to lace you need to keep it from becoming tangled. To reduce the chances of tangling, when you wash the lace item, pin it to a clean, white cloth. Gently hand wash in cool or lukewarm water using a soap or detergent designed for delicate fabrics. Squeeze out excess water and don't rub, wring, or twist. Then spread it on a towel to dry. Fasten a large item, like a tablecloth, to a white sheet. Wait until both are dry to separate.

With your lingerie and other delicates, the best way to go is with a lingerie or net washing machine bag. You can find lingerie bags in any home goods store and in places like Target or Wal-Mart. When you need to wash these items, just place them in the bag and zip it shut then put the bag in with the rest of the laundry load. After the load is finished washing you'll want to air dry your delicates. Your delicates are delicate so you want to treat them with as much care as possible!

Sometimes you're in a rush and may not have time to wait for your bra or underwear to dry all the way. However you don't have to resort to wet underwear! Use your hair dryer to speed up that air drying process. The air is hotter, blows faster, and allows you to concentrate that air on a specific item. It will probably still take a few minutes but a few minutes is definitely better than a few hours! Also, it will dry even faster if you slip a dry cleaner bag over the item and trap the hot air inside.

Washing your lace and lingerie really isn't that bad and you can definitely do it on your own. If you just take care with your delicate belongings then those items will stay nice and delicate! Here's to clean and always delicate delicates!
