Removing Cat Urine from Multicolored Pillows

Written by Lee Wyatt (last updated August 14, 2023)

Cats are perhaps one of the most inquisitive of all pets, and as such they can get just about everywhere. In fact, many of the young cats that I have known in my lifetime have had a tendency to like hiding and playing with the pillows in the living room. Unfortunately, this also meant that the young kittens had a tendency to leave certain ''surprises'' in such areas, such as taking a quick bathroom break. This can lead to the unfortunate necessity of removing cat urine from multicolored pillows.

While it can often be difficult to get multicolored pillows cleaned in such a situation, it is not impossible. In order to get the pillows clean, all you really need to do is use a little ingenuity, patience, and care. Use the methods listed here, either singly or together, to help you when working on these types of stains and problems. You will be amazed to find out how easy it really is to remove the stain if you only use a little effort. Keep in mind that you should always test these methods in an innocuous location before you fully implement them. This way you will be able to tell if there will be any damage to the colors when you clean the pillows.

  • Vinegar. Vinegar can be an exceptionally good natural cleaner and deodorizer. There is only one slight problem with it though; generally speaking, vinegar has a fairly strong odor itself. To counteract this, simply use some white vinegar which usually has a significantly reduced odor. Using distilled white vinegar, spray a little bit onto the stain and then begin to sponge the stain away. Be sure that you are working from the center out. Wait a few minutes and then begin to blot the wet area dry. Repeat this as often as necessary to actually remove the stain.
  • OxyClean. As long as the pillow is machine washable, you shouldn't have too much of difficulty removing cat urine from multicolored pillows. Soak the pillow in some OxyClean in the washing machine for a full 24 hours before washing. Follow the directions on the back of the OxyClean bottle to ensure that you use the proper amount of cleanser. After the time has passed, set the washing machine on the delicate or gentle cycles, and wash as you normally would. When drying, be sure that you use the same settings.
  • Dishwashing soap and Dettol. Fill your sink with warm water. Add some dishwashing soap, and a cap full of a product called Dettol. Soak the pillow thoroughly, and move it around periodically. Drain the sink, and completely rinse out the pillow. Allow the pillow to air dry, or place it into the dryer on the gentlest setting, before you use it again.
