Mold Cleaning

Written by Doris Donnerman (last updated August 2, 2021)

Some cleaning responsibilities are important not only for the sake of keeping an area looking nice, but also for the health of you and those around you. Some messes can be toxic and harmful, and these are the areas that must be cleaned as soon as possible.

Mold is a common problem in many buildings and homes. This fungus can appear in different areas for various reasons, and it favors warm, humid places where the air is stale. Although not all kinds of mold are toxic, many are harmful to inhale or touch, and they can also stain and damage surfaces.

If you find that there is mold in your home, don't panic. You can usually get rid of it with some simple cleaning steps. But first of all, you need to figure out what has caused the mold to flourish in a particular area and try to fix the problem. For instance, if you find mold in the bathroom, consider opening a window after the shower is used or install an air vent. This will allow airflow and will make the area less hospitable to mold. If the reason for growth is unclear, consider having someone inspect the area to locate the source. If you don't eliminate the source of mold growth, it will probably grow back even after cleaning.

To clean mold, you have a couple of options. If the problem is especially serious, you should hire a professional to clean it up. These technicians are experienced and can take care of the problem properly. If the mold growth isn't too bad, you should be fine taking care of it on your own. The ease of removal also depends on the surface. On porous surfaces, for example, the mold might be impossible to remove, requiring you to have such surfaces (like carpet) removed.

To clean non-porous surfaces of mold, you can find certain cleaners that will remove the mold with ease. You can also make your own. Use bleach and water mixture and spray on the mold, scrubbing thoroughly. Rinse the area and wipe the water off. To prevent mold from appearing again, keep the area as dry as possible and be sure the room is well-ventilated.

Some mold problems are mild and easy to clean, but others can be extremely hazardous. Be sure that you are properly equipped with safety gear when cleaning mold, and do you best to eliminate the source so it can't return.
