Duct Cleaning Equipment

Written by Hettie Woehler (last updated October 14, 2019)

If you happen to have central air in your home, then you know just how easily the ducts can become clogged with dirt, dust, and other debris. When that happens, you need to either hire someone to clean everything for you, or you need to pull out the duct cleaning equipment and get to work. However, before you can begin to gather together the proper duct cleaning equipment, you need to know a little bit about it. Here is some helpful information that you can use to ensure you have the proper equipment on hand when you do begin cleaning.

  • Types of air duct cleaning equipment. There are two main categories of air duct cleaning equipment: Negative Air Duct Cleaning Systems and Rotary Brush Air Duct Cleaning Systems.
  • Negative air duct cleaning systems. This system sucks debris, dust, etc back towards the Negative Air Machine. An air compressor is sometimes used for larger jobs to blow air from the other end to create a "tornado" like effect for better cleaning.
  • Rotary brush type systems. This system cleans the ducts by incorporating a spinning brush which scrubs the ducts and a vacuum to remove dirt, dust, and debris. It is most suitable for use in residential and light commercial air duct cleaning. It may be used in conjunction with the Negative Air method mentioned above.
  • Pressure washers. Pressure Washers deep-clean unused ducts where an office or home was closed up for some time. It is also used where toxic contamination took place through ventilation ducts. Flood or natural disaster can also cause debris collections in ducts.
  • Duct cleaning brushes. Duct cleaning brushes have long handles with very stiff bristles. Power brushes rotate inside the duct where the bristles stir up the dust and debris where it is wiped away or sucked up into a vacuum cleaner.

Some duct cleaning systems have the brush attached directly to the vacuum hose. The problem with such brushes are that it is impossible to follow the twist and turns of ductwork with a big vacuum hose. Rather go for a system that separates the brush from the vacuum to allow more manoeuvrability.
