Shower Care

Written by Karen Bates (last updated April 15, 2024)

Your bathroom is one area of your house that you probably don't enjoy cleaning. Some of the most disliked chores have to do with bathroom cleaning, and it's no wonder that many people try to put off bathroom cleaning tasks for as long as possible.

Unfortunately, procrastination won't cause the work to get done. In fact, the best tactic when it comes to cleaning the bathroom is to prevent messes from building up. This means you should constantly take measures to keep dirt and build-up under control so that it doesn't become a huge chore later on.

Although many people will agree that the toilet is the worst bathroom chore, cleaning the shower is one of the most difficult and time-consuming tasks. The shower area of the bathroom is used often and is prone to some of the most stubborn messes in your home. Dirt, soap scum, hard water, mold, mildew, and other issues are all things you may end up needing to deal with when cleaning the shower.

To have the most success with shower care, take the task one step at a time. Clean each part of the shower to get rid of any build-up and to prevent more from showing up. To take on the shower, follow these tips:

  • If your shower has a vinyl shower curtain, you don't necessarily have to throw it out when it gets dirty. Instead, clean the curtain with running water and a scrub brush to remove soap scum and mildew.
  • To clean glass doors on your shower, use a solution of white vinegar and water. You can apply this mixture with a sponge or scrub brush, and it does wonders at removing hard water spots and more from the shower door. You may want to use a squeegee to ensure a clear, spot-free result.
  • Keep the tub in your shower clean by using a bathroom cleaner, baking soda paste, or a vinegar and water solution. Apply the cleaner to the tub, then scrub using a brush or sponge to remove stubborn rings or other dirty spots. Let cleaners sit on the tub surface for a few minutes before rinsing them away.
  • Clean up the tile with a commercial tile cleaner. You will probably need to do some scrubbing if the grout hasn't been deep cleaned in a while. To accomplish this, use a small scrub brush and your cleaner of choice (you may even prefer a cleaner formulated specifically for grout cleaning). Scrub and rinse away with water.
  • Keep faucets and showerheads looking great. A water and vinegar solution can remove unwanted water spots. Spray the surface, then wipe away with a clean rag.

Caring for your shower may take a little time, but the effort is well worth it.
