Cleaning Paper Lampshades

Written by Karen Bates (last updated July 24, 2023)

A lampshade can definitely make a huge difference in the look of a room. The colors, patterns, and general style of a lampshade add to the overall feel of a room. Although a lampshade may seem like a simple detail, it can make a huge impact. One beautiful but delicate type of lampshade is one made of paper. These can be purchased at a store or even made by hand. Paper lampshades can come in a variety of colors, shapes and designs, and bring a subtle sophistication to the room.

With such delicate lampshades, you might be wondering what happens if you need to clean them. Don't worry, you no longer need to have anxiety or panic attacks when it comes time to clean paper lampshades Use these methods for keeping your lampshades in great condition.

  • Light dusting. It's true that lampshades can be a magnet for dust. Fortunately, often all that is needed to remedy this situation is a quick sweep of the duster. Use a duster often (perhaps once or twice a week) to rid your paper lampshades of dust. This helps to prevent dirt build-up, which can be harder to remove.
  • Vacuuming. Another option is to use your vacuum. Hook up your brush attachment and carefully pick up dirt and dust from the lampshade. If you are careful while doing this you won't damage the lampshade, but be sure that you are careful.
  • No water! Do not use water on paper lampshades. Water can cause serious damage and may even weaken the fragile material of the shade. Instead, it is better to wipe or dust away dirt gently. It is fine, though, to wipe the base of the lamp with a damp cloth to get rid of dirt.
  • Prevent dust buildup. Try to keep dust from settling on your lampshades. It is a good idea to dust the whole room regularly, and vacuum to prevent dust and dirt from making a home on your furniture as well as your lampshades. The less dust you have in your home, the less there will be to get your lampshades dirty.

With care, your delicate paper lampshades should stay in good condition for many years. Just remember to be careful when cleaning and dusting, and to avoid wiping them with water. Dusting often and wiping away excess dirt or dust when needed should be enough to maintain a clean look.
