Cleaning Glass Top Stoves
Written by Lee Wyatt (last updated July 23, 2018)
Glass top stoves are on the rise as one of the leading choices for home appliances. This is easy to understand, since they simply look better than most other kinds of stoves, and also look as if they would be much easier to clean. Unfortunately, cleaning glass top stoves needs to be done in the right way or you can easily cause some problems. These problems could include damaging the stove itself, or even getting hurt, let alone making a bigger mess than you originally had. Don't worry though, it doesn't have to be that difficult of a task. Simply follow these simple guidelines, and you will be cleaning glass top stoves the correct way in no time.
- Turn the stove off. Before you begin cleaning glass stove tops, make sure that the stove has actually been turned off. This will help ensure that you do not burn yourself, or burn the cleaner that you use on the stove. Burned cleaner can be particularly difficult to remove from glass top stove, and can even have harmful effects on you. Play it safe by checking to make sure that the stove has turned off, and cooled down before cleaning.
- Clean after every use. Clean glass stove tops after every single use. It is always much easier to clean things as you go, rather than waiting for the mess to get so huge that you can't avoid it any more. This will also help prevent any spilled food, sauces, or other items from getting baked on and becoming more difficult to clean off. Since baked on food can also be pretty abrasive, if you don't clean up the stove after every use, then you run the risk of creating gouges and scratches in your stove top.
- Use a mild cleanser. For general, light cleaning of your glass stove top use regular soap and water. Do not use any abrasive cleaners, scrubbies, or steel wool, all of which can gouge or damage the stove top. Instead use a mild liquid dish soap, and a sponge or cloth to wipe the stove top down.
- Use specialized tools. If you happen to have any heavy duty spills than happened to have been burned onto the glass, don't worry. You can use specialized glass stove top cleaners to help remove those stains. Check your owner's manual for the manufacturers recommendations, and follow them. While these specialized cleaning tools will be a little more expensive, they will do the job right the first time without damaging your expensive appliance.
