Closet Organization

Written by Karen Bates (last updated May 31, 2021)

Things in your home can become disorganized at times. Whether you own more stuff than you have room for or just aren't sure where to put things, you will probably end up with clutter and stacks of items without a designated spot.

Implementing a system of organization is one of the best ways to save your living space from a cluttered look and feel. Although starting this project and keeping it up can be potentially difficult, it is definitely worthwhile to maintain a clean atmosphere free from unsightly stacks and piles of things.

One area where organization is key is inside the closet. The closet is an important storage space where you can ideally hide away a lot of items, but only if this area is properly organized. If the closet becomes a place where you simply throw objects to get them out of your way, then it can become a messy and unmanageable space.

To organize the closet, you have some different options. Depending on the size of the closet and how much you need to fit inside, you may have to implement a certain system. Try one of the ideas below and adjust to fit your situation:

  • Start by removing everything from the closet. Throw away or donate unneeded items, then put the remaining things into piles of similar items.
  • Set up a shelving system in your closet. You can have one installed, or just use regular freestanding shelves. Either way, you will suddenly have a lot more storage space to work with for boxes, clothes, and items that need a place to go.
  • Use bins or boxes to help keep things organized. Decide which similar items will go in each, and then label the box or bin so you can quickly find items later on. You can store these by stacking or sliding them on shelves within the closet.
  • If you have a lot of shoes to deal with, consider using clear plastic show boxes to store them. This way, they will stack neatly but still be visible and easy to find.
  • For clothes that are not in season, store them away in a box or bin until the right season comes along instead of keeping them hung up and taking up precious space. This works well for bulky coats and jackets, too.

Getting your closet organized makes finding items much easier, and it doesn't take very long to accomplish.
