Wood Floor Cleaner

Written by Karen Bates (last updated March 4, 2019)

Hard wood floors are a beautiful and popular floor covering that can be used just about anywhere in your home. Wood floors come in different colors, shades, patterns, and textures, and add a unique beauty to any area that no other kind of flooring can create.

If you have wood floors in your home, you probably know that they require special care for their cleaning and maintenance. Although different methods may work just fine, you should be sure that you use a cleaner or cleaning procedure that is compatible with your floor. This will prevent scratches, discoloration, damage, and other issues that may occur with improper care.

Using the right cleaner and cleaning method for your wood floor is vital for keeping it looking beautiful and new for many years. When considering cleaning your wood floor, remember these ideas:

  • Use a floor cleaner that won't leave a filmy layer of residue on your floor. It can help to follow the floor manufacturer's specific instructions for cleaning when you consider which cleaner to use.
  • Avoid using too much water while you clean your wood floor. Excessive water can damage the wood. Of course, you may need to use a little water while cleaning sometimes—just be careful.
  • Sweep your wood floor often, and especially before you apply any kind of cleaner. This will make the cleaning more effective.
  • Some floor cleaners can do multiple jobs with one formula. For instance, you may find a cleaner that gets rid of dirt and buildup, helps fill in scratches in the wood, and leaves the surface shiny. Using a spray cleaner for your wood floor minimizes the amount of water used for cleaning but still gets your floor clean and looking great.
  • Don't use cleaners with ammonia, since these can damage your floor's finish.
  • Think about getting your wood floor sealed. By sealing, you will help prevent damage and may extend the life of the floor. It also makes the surface easier to clean because it won't be as susceptible to damage.
  • Clean up all spills and dirt as soon as possible. You can use a damp rag with a little cleaner if needed.

Wood floors are a beautiful investment. Keep them looking amazing by using the right cleaner for your floor and preventing dirt from building up on the surface. Consult the floor manufacturer's instructions for cleaning to make sure you don't use the wrong cleaning method.
