Air Cleaners

It seems that air pollution is here to stay. Diseases brought on humans and animals may include allergies, asthma, lung diseases and illness. Some of the culprits in our homes are benzene, cigarette smoke, nail treatment products, dust, dust mites and pet dander. Finding and using an air cleaner or air purifier will help fight these diseases. It helps to understand the different types of air purifiers that are available.

Different Types Air Purifiers

Before you buy an air cleaner, do your home work to ensure that you select the type suitable for your needs. The following paragraphs give short descriptions of different air cleaners

  • HEPA air purifier. Employ a cloth type filter that can trap 99.9% of particles 0.3 microns or larger in size, and a fan to circulate air through the machine. The replaceable filter can last several years depending on how polluted the air in your home or office is.
  • Ozone sir purifiers. Ozone is a highly reactive oxidant that destroys certain bacteria and chemicals. Although ozone is very effective in fighting strong odours, you should take note of the fact that ozone reacts with substances in the air which is broken down into other materials that cause pollutants.
  • Carbon air purifiers. Activated carbon air filters consists of tiny pores. These pores are highly adsorbent. They are highly effective with chemicals, gases, smoke, and odours.
  • Ionic air purifier. Do not have a cloth filter like the HEPA machines. They work by "ionizing" the air, causing particulates to gain a positive or negative charge. Can remove extremely fine particles anywhere in a room; even several feet away from the machine.
  • Ultraviolet light air purifiers. These lamps are known to sterilize micro-organisms that pass through it. Microorganisms treated with this light, such as germs, viruses, bacteria, and mold, I'm told, can no longer reproduce and grow.
  • Hydroxyl air purifier. Hydroxyl radicals are powerful cleansing agents that occur naturally in the Earth's atmosphere. Hydroxyl radicals are 1,000,000 times faster at destroying pollutants in the air than ozone.
