Cleaning LCD Computer Screens

Written by Lee Wyatt (last updated September 10, 2018)

It can be a little confusing trying to figure out what the best way to clean LCD computer screens are. If you have a liquid crystal display (or LCD) screen on your computer, you know they seem to have this uncanny ability to attract dust, fingerprints and grime by simply sitting there. Keeping these kinds of computer screens can be difficult how easy it is for them to get damaged. These screens are extremely easy to damage, hurt or break if you are not careful. Here are a few simple methods that you can use to clean your LCD Computer screens.

  • Eyeglass cleaner. Considering that many, if not all, of the eyeglasses on the market are currently made from types of plastics, it makes sense that you could use the same type of cleaner on something else that is made from a similar material. However, when using eyeglass cleaner do not spray it directly onto the screen; instead spray it onto a soft cotton or microfiber cloth and then wipe the screen down.
  • Eyeglass wipes. Pre-moistened eyeglass cleaning wipes can be purchased at just about every department and eyeglass store in the country. These wipes are the perfect item to use when cleaning your LCD computer screen. They typically have the right amount of fluid already on a cloth that will not scratch or damage lenses—and therefore will not scratch or damage your computer screen. Best of all, these eyeglass wipes are pretty inexpensive.
  • Commercial cleaner. This method is probably he most expensive. You can purchase "specialized" cleaning solution for LCD screens at most computer or electronics stores. Any time that you purchase something that has been "specially" made, it is going to cost you more money. When you use this type of product, make sure that you follow the directions that came with the product. A word of caution, though: Do not spray the cleaner directly onto the screen. Instead spray it onto your cleaning rag and gently wipe the screen clean.
  • Homemade cleaner. This is the most inexpensive method available: A homemade cleaner made from a 50/50 solution of distilled water and white vinegar. Put this mixture into a small spritzer or an atomizer type of bottle. Spray a little bit onto a soft cotton cloth, like an old t-shirt, and then wipe the screen off. Be gentle as you do this so that you don't damage the screen and don't leave any streaks.
