Area Rug Cleaning

Written by Karen Bates (last updated March 22, 2021)

Area rugs are a great way to change the look of a room or protect the floor. You can change the whole look and feel of a room by simply adding an area rug. Rugs come in different shapes and sizes. Some cover almost the entire room, but area rugs are a bit smaller and are generally used to bring the furnishings in one area of the room together.

Just like carpeting though, these lovely area rugs can pick up dirt and stains from everyday life. Before you know it, these expensive and often elaborate rugs can start to look dirty and dull. The question one might ask is how do you clean an area rug, and how is it different from cleaning a regular carpet? If you want to do some area rug cleaning, then this is what you need to do.

  • Do you need to spot clean the rug? First, remember that you should not rub at the spot. Instead, gently blot up the spill. This ensures that the stain doesn't get rubbed deeper into the rug.
  • Gentle solutions. To get a spot out of the rug, use a gentle cleaning solution and a rag. Place a towel under the rug where the stain is located so that the floor underneath is not damaged by any liquid seeping through. Spray the spot and carefully blot the stain out. Some cleaners are too harsh for area rugs, so be sure that the cleaner you use it gentle enough for your rug.
  • Homebrewed cleaners. Another method for area rug cleaning is to use club soda, diluted vinegar, or water instead of a commercial cleaner. If the stain is too stubborn, you will need to try a stronger cleaner or have a professional cleaner it for you.
  • Regular vacuuming. Remember that one of the best ways to keep you rug clean overall is to vacuum it often. Removing dirt and debris with your vacuum is vital to the cleanliness of your carpet, and this step will help prevent dirt from setting into your rug.
  • Avoid washing machines. Many area rugs should not be washed in the washing machine because of their delicate nature and size. Some smaller rugs, however, may be washing machine safe. Read the labels or tags on the rug to find care instructions.
  • Deep cleaning. Area rug cleaning will sometimes require you to do some deep cleaning. To deep-clean most area rugs, you should hire a professional to do the job at least every year or two. In some cases a professional can do the job in your home, or might take the rug and return it to you clean.

Be gentle with your area rug and vacuum often to prevent dirt setting in.
