Green Carpet Cleaning

Written by Emily McBride (last updated February 18, 2019)

After a while, every carpet can use a good cleaning. Carpet cleaning can help your carpet to look cleaner, and also get rid of the trapped dust, dirt, and other potential allergens. But, is cleaning your carpet worth the harmful chemicals? Green, or organic, carpet cleaning is a new trend that gets your carpet clean without noxious odors or harsh chemicals. Going green with your carpet cleaning can also help your carpet to last longer. Another reason to go green with carpet cleaning is that it may end up saving you money.

"Going green" is becoming more and more popular. But what exactly does it mean? Going green is the same thing as going organic. Organic products do not contain artificial chemicals. When something is said to be organic, it means that it is made up of carbon-based chemical compounds. So how do you go green with carpet cleaning, a process that usually requires heavy, harsh chemicals?

Green carpet cleaners are usually made up of materials like salt and baking soda. These materials are not expensive, which helps contribute to the lowered cost of green carpet cleaning. To help remove dirt and to bring out the color of your carpet, sprinkle salt or corn starch. Vacuum it after fifteen to thirty minutes. If your carpet smells bad, sprinkle a mixture of salt and baking soda onto your carpet. Vacuum it up after you let it sit for thirty minutes. You can also add a bit of cinnamon or allspice into the mixture to help scent your carpet. If you choose to do this, however, first test it on a small, hidden area to ensure that the spice will not stain your carpet.

The easiest way to clean your carpets organically is get it done by a professional. There are different methods for green carpet cleaning. Some methods use hot water, while others are a form of dry cleaning. Make sure you research green carpet cleaners before you choose one. The easiest way to do this is to ask your friends or neighbors if they have any green carpet cleaners they recommend.

Green carpet cleaning may be more than just a new trend—it can help your carpet and help you stay free from the harsh chemicals of regular carpet cleaning.
