Cleaning a Carpet

Written by Karen Bates (last updated March 4, 2019)

Having carpet in your home can add a coziness and comfort that many people enjoy. Having a soft feeling beneath your feet can be relaxing, and many people prefer carpeted areas as opposed to a hard flooring material.

Although many people like to have carpet in their homes, carpet can be somewhat high-maintenance. It needs to be vacuumed often to clean up dirt and dust, and it also needs to be spot cleaned if anything gets on it that could potentially leave a stain. Carpet can begin to look dull and dirty over time, even if you do vacuum and spot clean it often. Along with this regular maintenance, you should also give your carpet a deep cleaning once a year or so.

When it comes to cleaning the carpet, you have some different options. One of the most cost-effective ways is to do it on your own. Renting a cleaning machine is a great way to handle this task. Although it may mean more work for you, it is probably the least expensive way to achieve a clean carpet. Many stores have machines that are ready for you to rent, and you can also buy shampoos and pretreatment sprays at the same time. If you would rather own a machine than rent one, there are many options for you to choose from with a wide variety of prices and features.

Probably the easiest way to get the carpet cleaned well is to hire professional cleaners to do the job. These cleaning technicians can clean all carpeted areas of your home, including stairs, without you needing to lift a finger. This might not appeal to everyone, though, since hiring carpet cleaners can become a bit expensive.

How often you clean your carpet depends on factors like the amount of traffic the carpeted area gets and how badly stained the area is. You may want to have the carpet cleaned once a year, or it may need to be deep cleaned more often. Don't forget to clean area rugs and smaller rugs regularly as well.

Because carpets can be expensive, you should make sure that you take proper care of them. Along with deep cleanings, remember to vacuum often to ensure that a lot of dirt doesn't build up in the fibers. It can also help to avoid wearing shoes on the carpet and cleaning up any spills as soon as possible. Maintaining your carpet properly will keep it looking great for many years.
