Cleaning the Bathroom

Written by Karen Bates (last updated September 14, 2020)

We all have chores around the house that we tend to dislike more than others, and for a lot of people this chore is cleaning the bathroom. The bathroom can get dirty fast, and it isn't always easy to clean. Because of this, you might want to put off cleaning this room.

To keep the bathroom clean, you will need to tidy it up often as well as do a deep cleaning once in a while. Each part of the bathroom will probably need to be cleaned in a specific way for best results, using certain cleaning tools and solutions. Pay attention to each of the following areas while cleaning your bathroom:

  • Toilet. While wearing protective gloves, apply toilet bowl cleaner to the inside surface of the toilet, then scrub the area with a toilet brush. Sanitize the toilet seat, lid, and outside of the bowl with a cleaning solution, then wipe off.
  • Tub and shower. Use a tub cleaner to help remove the dirty film that can show up in this area. You can also try a natural cleaning method such as vinegar and baking soda. Use a scrub brush or a sturdy sponge to clean surfaces, then rinse.
  • Sink and counter. Use a multi-purpose or bathroom cleaner on the faucet, sink, and counter. You can also use a vinegar/water solution. Spray the cleaner, then use a rag or sponge to wipe over the surfaces. Wipe the faucet with a dry cloth afterwards to leave it shiny and free of water spots.
  • Windows and mirrors. For beautiful streak-free glass, use a glass cleaner or a vinegar/water solution. Spray over the glass, then use either a squeegee or paper towels to wipe the cleaner away. If you have a glass shower door, you can also clean it with this method.
  • Floor. Sweep or vacuum any loose dirt from the floor. Mop using a cleaning solution mixed with water to remove any stuck-on dirt or messes. Pay special attention to baseboards and grout, if you have tile. You may need to really scrub certain areas where the dirt has started to build up and won't come off with the mop alone.

Before cleaning each area, remove any toiletries and bottles so that nothing gets in your way while you work. Although it isn't a very fun job, if you clean the bathroom before it gets too bad you will be able to get the task done a lot more quickly.
