Air Cleaning Equipment

Have you thought about getting some air cleaning equipment around the home? If so then chances are fairly good that you have at least thought about air purifiers, and whether they actually do any good. Considering how many different kinds of air cleaning equipment is currently available on the market, it only makes sense to learn what you can about them before you make your final decision.

One of the most helpful questions that you can ask yourself though about air cleaning equipment is what exactly is an air purifier. Simply put, an air purifier removes contaminants from the air which may affect allergy sufferers and people suffering from asthma. These particles can include things like dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, second-hand tobacco smoke and more.

Types of Air Purifiers

  • Honeywell grill style air cleaner with filter. The filter removes unwanted and unhealthy particles by passing the air through a filter. In households these filters are usually part of the heating or cooling system. Typical materials include foam, cotton, fibreglass or synthetic fibres.
  • HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) Filters. These filters meet a Department of Energy standard for removing particles from the air. The filter can consist of any material as long as it meets this set standard. The amount of air flowing through, varies according to the size of the filter.
  • Adsorbents. The most common adsorbent is activated charcoal as it is extremely porous and has many microscopic "nooks and crannies" to trap passing molecules. It takes care of odors, fumes and chemicals in the air. Larger particles are simply stuck in the many pores in the charcoal.
  • UV light. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation sterilizes certain micro-organisms as it passes through the filter leaving them harmless.
  • Industrial Air Purifiers. Industries install air purifiers far more powerful (and expensive) than consumer models. These air purifiers are essential where manufacturing processes require a contaminant-free environment.

Use and Benefits Of Purifiers

According to certain Technological and scientific studies poor air quality may well be a contributing factor causing some forms of cancer, respiratory illnesses, and other pulmonary infections and illnesses.

Sick Building Syndrome is defined as an "acute incidence of indoor air pollution that can occur in closed or poorly ventilated offices and residences. According to NASA research, plants control indoor air pollution. Plants are no longer only decorative, they can improve your physical health too.

Air pollutants can come from more than just your pets and dust. Did you know that your computer equipment as well as furniture, paint and air conditioners can pollute the air you breathe in at home or office? Indoor plants purify and renew the indoor stale air by filtering out toxins, pollutants and even the carbon dioxide you exhale and replace it with life-sustaining oxygen. As such it is always a good idea to have a few houseplants around.
