Upright Vacuums

Written by Karen Bates (last updated February 26, 2018)

For those who have carpet in their homes, having a vacuum to clean up dirt, dust, and other debris in the carpet fibers is quite important. Having a vacuum that works well and does the job right allows you to keep your carpets clean and free of dirty build-up. Vacuuming often can prevent big messes from developing.

There are different kinds of vacuums that you may want to use to care for the carpet in your home. For instance, you may look at handheld vacuums, canister vacuums, cordless vacuums, backpack vacuums, and upright vacuums. Which you choose will depend on what needs to be cleaned and the nature of the cleaning job. You definitely don't want a little handheld vacuum to clean a large area of carpet, for example, but this type would be perfect for small spaces where storage room is an issue.

The upright vacuum is one variety that has become widely used, especially in residences. Upright vacuums include a cleaning head at the bottom of the device, with a handle, cleaning bag, and accessories attached. This vacuum is fairly compact, and great for most homes and small office areas. You can work the vacuum simply by maneuvering the head using the handle as dirt and debris are sucked up.

Although most upright vacuums sport a similar look, different models will include certain features that make them unique. There are various kinds of upright vacuums that you can consider when searching for the right vacuum for your home.

You should consider the following features when looking at upright vacuum cleaners:

  • You can find upright vacuums with or without a bag. A vacuum that uses bags collects sucked-up dirt into a disposable vacuum bag that is discarded and replaced when full. If you go for a bagless option, you will need to empty a container attached to the vacuum when it gets full.
  • Some vacuum cleaners, bagless models in particular, use filters to help keep your home's air cleaner. These filters may need to be washed periodically, or replaced with a fresh filter to keep them working correctly.
  • Consider which attachment you will need with your vacuum. Some models include or more attachments, such as brush, crevice tool, or upholstery tool to make cleaning certain areas more convenient.
  • You should also consider factors like the cord length, noise level, weight, price, and energy usage as you look at different vacuum cleaner models.

An upright vacuum is an important machine to have around to clean up carpeted areas. Decide which features you need in a vacuum before you start shopping.
