Television Cleaning Basics

Written by Jill Culley (last updated April 2, 2018)

Televisions collect an incredible amount of dust because of their static electricity. Also, they are typically in a room that has a lot of traffic. Keeping a television clean is a fairly essential thing to do mostly because the cleaner the screen, the better the image displays. Try to clean it weekly if you can if you watch TV regularly or every couple of weeks if you don't normally watch the set. Follow these simple steps to make sure your set is correctly cleaned.

  1. Dust first. Dusting the equipment first makes the cleaning a lot easier. A lot of times, dust combined with water can make a mud like substance, which is even harder to clean. Simply take a Swiffer duster or a dust towel and wipe down the entire surface of the set. Start at the top and work downwards. It's important to clean the backside of the set as dust can circulate from that side to the front.
  2. 2. Cleaner. For the most part, you want to clean the surface with warm water. Many people use glass cleaner such as Windex to clean the screen. On older sets, it's generally okay to do this. However, with the advent of more modern technology, a lot of newer sets can't be cleaned with glass cleaner. Streaking and discoloration can occur. Instead, try cleaning your screen with a very soft cloth and warm water. No soap is needed.
  3. Drying. Never let your set air dry. Always wipe it off with a dry soft cloth. If not, the screen will have streak marks on it, which are much more difficult to remove than simply cleaning it with a towel after it has been washed. Also of note: cleaning streaks off of newer machines can cause damage depending on how hard you press on the surface to clean it. This will definitely affect the images displayed on the screen.

Cleaning your television set is a necessary thing to do whether you watch a lot of TV or a little. Some machines come with cleaners as issued by the manufacturer and that is always the best way to clean. If not, warm water and a clean dry cloth will suffice. A clean television set will make your set last longer and increase the quality of the images displayed on the screen. This is a minor task that takes mere minutes to accomplish but yields great results!
